Online connection required for a single player game?

5

Hi,

I started the game yesterday although I know that the release on XBOX was postponed (but this is not the topic here). However the game started and I got to the start screen. After pressing a button the game complained that the neocore servers are down.

Does this mean that this single player game needs an online server to work? (not talking about the DRM certificate I guess). And that I will not be able to play this game offline or when neocore decides to shutdown the servers in 5 years?

It's not only a single player game... in some videos Neocore says:

- Internet connection is for the backend
- Internet connection is for the global events
- Internet connection is for community features

- Internet connection is for sending issues and errors

Just heads up to: Neocore feedback to always online

And not to forget Co-op and PVP needs an Internet connection too.

All of the reasons are sound and make sense. Not to be flippant, but it's 2018. When aren't you connected to the internet in some capacity?

I don't need community features and the backend is a design decision (or whatever reason in a single player game)

This should be optional but was decided by Neocore to be mandatory, which I was not aware of. Since I want my games to be playable offline (read: even when the servers are shut down) I will try to return the game and get a refund.

you do not get my point. Some games had their servers shutdown months after release for whatever reason. If this would only prevent me from online co-op, this would be fine. But to prevent a single player game from playing just because the server was shutdown (for community features which I could not care less about) is beyond me. Global Events? No server, no event -> game could still be playable. Coop, PVP make it optional.

Even Blizzard was able to do this with D3.
